Coca-Cola Signs: A Symbol Of Refreshment

by Dan Wright

An Atlanta based physician mixed ingredients together creating a new beverage a few years before the calendar flipped to the twentieth century. No one could have guessed that this invention would one day become a multinational industry worth billions of dollars. The name and design came about because the good Doctor liked the look of the third letter of the alphabet juxtaposed upon itself.

Coca-Cola history is rife with advertising slogans, campaigns, and artwork. Each generation added their own twist to the beloved drink's marketing story. From the original sprightly delivery boy to Santa Clause, from celebrities to polar bears, Coca-Cola has created a world of highly prized collectibles that are sought around the world.

The original creator of Coca-Cola's Santa Claus was Haddon Sundblom, who drew him drinking from the iconic bottle. This image was used consistently for more than 30 years, dating back to the 1930's. It still appears today on Christmas ornaments, billboards, signs, and other promotional material.

The soft drink from Atlanta and its red stripe have spawned many memorable slogans and jingles through the years. The Christmas advertisement with races singing together over the beverage, the computer generated polar bears and Santa toasting happy children with "The Friendliest Drink on Earth" are only a small percentage of the enduring images associated with the beverage.

Celebrities have also played an important role in selling Coca-Cola to the people of the world. From Charlie McCarthy to the celebrities of today, spokespeople (or animals) have appeared on many billboards for the company. Today's well-known spokes-animals are the polar bears. Introduced in 2003, the public fell instantly in love with the furry winter bears.

All of this advertising has lead to an incredible amount Coca-Cola signs being available as collectibles. Coca-Cola is a timeless product that has inspired massive collections of memorabilia. Collectors are avid about finding signs from each era in mint condition. Books have been published on the prices of the popular drink's memorabilia.

If you are thinking about starting a new hobby, find a corner that interests you first. Consider all of the pieces from a single year or location. Consider using the web and established local collectors for assistance. Be diligent! You never know what you will find until you look through local scrap shops and second hand sales.

Coca-Cola is known world wide as an icon meaning refreshment. The company's advertisement signage has been used throughout its history to denote the good feelings that its clients enjoy. No matter which sign, a collector will desire it because of the positive feelings and memories it brings back.
