Determine Your Comic Book Value

by Candace Right

Have you found a stash of old comics in the attic? Maybe you happened on someone's comic book collection at a garage or tag sale and picked them up with the idea of making a few dollars. No matter how you obtained them, and regardless of whether you have a few or several dozen comic books, you need to learn the comic book value.

You have a lot of ways to determine the value of a comic book. First, you have to know what condition it's in, based on generally accepted guidelines. The rarity and desirability of a comic book is another big thing that can give you a good idea of what kind of price you can get for it.

There are two ways to determine comic book value, also called its grade. You can consult the CGC (Comics Guaranty Company) either by mail or at a comic book convention, or you can use information you find online to determine its grade. The grading terms are Mint, Near Mint, Very Fine, Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. You can find books that guide you in determining the grade, but the information is readily available on the internet, too.

You'll find that it is much easier to determine comic book value once you know the grade. One way to get a good idea as to how comic books are selling is to check out online auctions on eBay. Be aware, however, that the values will tend to vary from issue to issue. Price is often dependant on special things about the issue, such as printing errors or rarity.

Another thing you can do is buy a price guide on comic books; there are different ones to choose from. Some of these guides give you a range of prices for a comic based on its grade, while others just give one price for each comic. Lastly, try using a good search engine to find information on a specific issue, and join an online community of other collectors.
