Home Security Door Locks: Pay Attention To The Mounts!

by Rex Freiberger

The majority of homeowners place an enormous value on security and wellbeing in their homes so ensuring safety and protection is a priority. Keeping out home invaders when at the residence and keeping burglars out is important. Home security door locks thus must be seen as a huge consideration as both the type of lock that is purchased and how it is installed matters.

Front doors are usually given top priority when people start thinking about security even though every exterior door and window can provide a point of entry for intruders. You'll find that some areas of the country have building codes which deal with door security. These statutes may require a certain type of deadbolt on a rental property. Or they may disallow the use of the double deadbolts which require a key before people can get out of the building in an emergency.

These double dead bolt home security locks are harder for intruders to use to gain access to the home. They prevent being able to just knock out glass in or close to a door lock and just reach in to unlock the door. The problem is in escaping a fire or other hazards if the key is misplaced or the person is cut off from reaching it. A kind of lock that is called "captured key" has a mechanism that is like a double deadbolt when everyone is gone, but allows easy escape when someone is still home.

All really good home security door locks will normally have a deadbolt associated with them that should hold even if the lock is picked. The real secret to a good, protective lock, though, is in the strike plate or box that the bolt portion enters. Most security experts say a bolt needs to be at least one inch long or more to be resistant enough to kicking and prying.

An important component of home security door locks is the bolt. To help improve security, consider using a strike box instead of just a strike plate when installing the lock. The strike box can significantly improve the safety of the lock and is extremely cost effective at about $10 per door. To achieve the best installation results, use three inch long or better screws or nails when anchoring the strike box.

Let's face it: it is worth the extra amount spent on superior home security door locks for that extra peace of mind. You may wish to consider steel locks, which are currently enjoying popularity due to their high security level and ability to withstand massive pressure.

Home security door locks increase safety and protect against intruders. Front door locks of quality mostly use a deadbolt style keeping the door locked even when picked. Choose home security locks of that are at least an inch long and built to resist thousands of pounds of pressure. A strike box instead of just a strike plate is a good choice. An existing strike plates can be replaced with more secure strike boxes without changing the locks themselves. Anchoring the strike plate or box with screws or nails that are at least three inches long. High quality locks are more expensive than regular locks but are worth the price.
